🧠 The illusion of the short term
🧠 The Illusion of Short-Term
What if our biggest trap isn’t the lack of information… but the lack of perspective?
Every day, we scroll through hundreds of posts on our phones.
📱 A news item.
😂 A funny video.
🏡 An advertisement.
📈 A tip.
🍔 A recipe.
A few weeks later...
How many of these posts do you actually remember?
Probably very few.
Yet they have occupied a portion of your attention.
It’s this reflection that led me to realize something.
I believe we are increasingly victims of the illusion of the short term.
📲 We are living more and more in the moment
Social networks aren’t the problem.
I’m on them too, and I see a lot of quality content there.
The challenge is more the speed at which everything scrolls.
A post chases the previous one.
A new one replaces yesterday’s.
Everything is designed to grab our attention for a few seconds… before moving on.
Living like this, I wonder if this way of consuming information ends up influencing the way we make decisions.
We want...
⚡ quick results.
💰 immediate savings.
🚀 to find the shortcut.
📲 to get an answer right away.
And quietly, the short term becomes our way of thinking.
🌳 Yet, the most beautiful successes take time
When you think about it...
A solid business doesn’t build itself in a few weeks.
A relationship of trust takes years.
A good reputation is built slowly.
Even our health is often the result of hundreds of small decisions repeated over many years.
Things that endure almost always have one thing in common.
They require patience.
Consistency.
And a vision that goes far beyond the immediate result.
🏡 What I observe in real estate
That’s probably where I notice this reality the most in my profession.
When the time comes to sell a property, the first question is sometimes:
“How can I save?”
And this question is perfectly legitimate.
No one likes paying more than necessary.
But sometimes, it becomes the only question.
We only compare percentages.
We only look at the cost.
We forget everything else.
Yet selling a property often represents the most important financial project of a lifetime.
I find that this decision deserves more than a simple price comparison.
🤝 A transaction... or an experience?
Personally, I have never wanted to be the cheapest broker.
I prefer to be the one who brings the most value.
The one who takes the time to listen.
The one who prepares files with rigor.
The one who negotiates when every detail can make a difference.
The one who shows up when the unexpected happens.
Because in the end, it’s rarely the percentages that my clients remember.
They mostly remember the quality of the support.
The trust.
The feeling of having been well advised.
And that, it’s priceless.
💡 The real cost... and the real value
We tend to measure what is easy to calculate.
The price.
The percentage.
The immediate savings.
But it is much harder to measure...
✅ the avoided stress.
✅ the mistakes that never happened.
✅ a negotiation that yields more.
✅ the time saved.
✅ peace of mind.
Yet, these are often the elements that make all the difference.
🌱 A reputation is built over time
I deeply believe that a reputation isn’t built with shortcuts.
It is built one transaction at a time.
One promise kept at a time.
One relationship of trust at a time.
Shortcuts sometimes attract attention quickly.
But they are rarely the things that build something lasting.
🙋 A personal reflection
When I began my career as a real estate broker in 2019, I could have sought shortcuts.
I could have wanted results as quickly as possible.
I chose instead another path.
The one of quietly building my reputation.
To learn.
To improve.
To invest a lot of time in my tools, my knowledge, my video capsules, my articles and especially in the relationships I develop with my clients.
Is this the fastest path?
Probably not.
Is it the one that requires the most patience?
Definitely.
But today, I’m convinced it was the right decision.
Because at the end of the day, what I want to build isn’t just a career.
It’s a reputation that will inspire trust five, ten, or twenty years from now.
And that, no short-term strategy can replace.
💬 And you?
I’d really love to hear from you.
Is there a major decision in your life where you chose the long term over immediate benefit?
A professional decision?
Personal?
Financial?
I’m convinced that the best decisions aren’t always the ones that give us the greatest satisfaction today.
They are often the ones we’re still proud of several years later.

I’ve also addressed this reflection in my Capsule #66 – The Illusion of Short Term.
I invite you to watch it and, above all, to come chat with me.
Because beyond real estate, I believe this reflection concerns us all.
